Learning and Development

We are evolving into a learning organisation culture. We believe that learning and development should be continuous and inseparable from your everyday work.

Our philosophy directly underpins the Council’s purpose and values and it directly relates to your ability to contribute successfully within your team and service unit as well as developing your individual skills. At the core of our model is the principle that learning is the responsibility of the individual, the team and the organisation.

Learning isn’t just in the classroom. As an employee, you will have access to our learning packages comprising a collection of different formal and informal learning materials. Videos, guidance, online courses, podcasts, white papers, books and so much more!

Skills and Learning – Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole

Our Skills and Learning team offers development opportunities to people across Dorset through innovative, high quality, accessible learning. Visit the Skills and Learning website to find out more about the courses they offer.

Support and Monitoring Your Development

We recognise starting a new job can be a daunting prospect. You will receive support from day one with a six month induction/employee support programme to ensure you succeed in your new role. We will regularly review your progress to ensure you get the opportunities you need to develop your skills.

Once the probation period is successfully completed we provide yearly appraisals. We view these as opportunities to identify any further development and learning you require and to support you in becoming a role model for our Priority Employee Behaviours. We also use appraisals to gain your ideas on what we can do better to improve the quality of life for the people of Poole.
